Most surprising business venture by a local celebrity (runner-up):  Aerosmith isn’t necessarily trying to target the skateboarders with its AOR-friendly music. But that didn’t stop drummer Joey Kramer from helping a skateboarding enthusiast in Norwell open up a hip skate shop on Newbury Street.

A Light For Darfur

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 6:22 am)

Boston Globe, MA
December 22, 2007

While George Clooney and Don Cheadle were in Rome collecting Men of Peace Awards for their efforts on behalf of Darfur, Jonah Burke was sitting quietly at his computer in Western Mass. A former Microsoft employee, Burke is the builder of the Darfur Wall, an affecting website that’s raised $80,000 for Darfur relief organizations. “I thought the site might help get a more emotional reaction from people,” said Burke, who’s working on the project with Eric Reeves, a Smith College professor and expert on the Sudan. “I thought it’d be a more persuasive way to visualize the problem.” There are 400,000 numbers on the online wall, each representing a person killed in Darfur. By donating $1 or more, visitors to darfurwall.org can light a number, turning it from dark gray to brilliant white. (The wall’s first number was lit by Peter Burchhardt of Shenzhen, China.) “I was IMing with Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, who said he really liked the site. . . . He used a lot of exclamation points,” said Burke. The goal is to raise $400,000, lighting every number.

Aerosmith: ‘Greatest Hits’ Reaches 11-Million Mark

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 4:07 am)

Blabbermouth.net, NY
December 21, 2007

Aerosmith’s “Greatest Hits” collection was certified 11-times-platinum on December 13, 2007, by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for sales in excess of 11 million copies in the United States.

Released in 1980, “Greatest Hits” is Aerosmith’s first standard “greatest hits” compilation album. It contained some of the hits that made the band an icon of the 1970s rock era. A few remastered versions of “Greatest Hits” appeared in the 1990s and are considered partly responsible for the band’s popular rejuvenation during the decade. Some of the tracks were significantly shortened from their original versions, paricularly “Same Old Song and Dance”, “Sweet Emotion”, and “Kings and Queens”.

“Greatest Hits” has gone on to become the band’s best-selling album in the United States. The band won a diamond award when the LP’s sales reached the ten-million mark in 2001.

Update From Maui

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 6:09 am)

KITV.com, HI
December 20, 2007

The rock group Aerosmith said Hawaii fans are not entitled to any damages due to a canceled concert scheduled for Maui.

Fans are suing to get back money they spent on travel for a concert that did not happen.

The lawsuit should be dismissed, Aerosmith lawyers said. They pointed out that other performers, like Pavarotti, have never been required to compensate for fan’s wasted travel expenses.

The attorneys said the concert was canceled because there was no way to get the band’s equipment to Maui in time after a concert in Chicago was rescheduled two days before Maui.

The group said it was always honest with its fans and should not be punished for alleged misrepresentation.

Under the state’s consumer law, plaintiffs could be eligible for triple their losses in damages and up to $5,000 if over the age of 62.

The case will be argued on Maui next month….

‘Hard Rock’ers Raise Big Bucks for B&G

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 4:20 am)

MotorcycleUSA.com, OR
December 19, 2007

The Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse Tour made it’s final stop for 2007 last weekend in true Hard Rock style, joined by two of America’s favorite rockers, legendary Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and Motley Crue’s Vince Neil.

The weekend kicked off at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, with Tyler donating a new outfit to the Hard Rock that he presented while perched on one the first bikes on the road from his new Red Wing Motorcycle company.

Later that evening, Fort Lauderdale Harley-Davidson held its “Bikers Bash” that benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Featured entertainment was hosted by Grammy winner/songwriter Richie Supa’s Unplugged Show with performances by Steven Tyler, Vince Neil, country music singer/songwriter Brett James, singer/songwriter Shelly Fairchild and acclaimed Grammy winner/songwriter Stephanie Smith.

Other motorcycle-riding celebrities in attendance included Ami James from Miami Ink, supermodel Niki Taylor, NASCAR driver Burney Lamar and NFL Hall of Famer Terry Kirby. There was a long list of renowned custom builders on hand as well, including Dave Perewitz, Eddie Trotta/Thunder Cycles, Aaron Greene/Paramount Cycles, Roger Bourget and Dale Parker/Wide Open Cycles.

The night helped raise over $100,000, featuring auction items such as Hard Rock guitars signed by rock stars around the world and two custom motorcycles; one by Sucker Punch Sally’s and one built on “The Today Show” by the Chopper Chicks Crew. This entire night of entertainment, great food and cocktails was underwritten by the Seminole Hard Rock, the Seminole Tribe of Florida and Bruce Rossmeyer Harley-Davidson, with all proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County.

Carrie Repp, producer/promoter of the Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse said, “The Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse Tour wrapped up the year with a bang. There is no other place you can experience great rock and roll from the likes of Steven Tyler and Vince Neil at a great venue like the Seminole Hard Rock while being surrounded by the best custom bike builders in the country. The best part was that all the proceeds went to charity, once again proving that bikers and rockers have the biggest hearts.”

The weekend of events culminated with the “SFPC’s 20th Annual Christmas Toys in the Sun Run.” This is the world’s longest motorcycle parade with over 30,000 riders police-escorted on a stretch of 25-miles of closed-down highways. The destination featured the Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse, vendors and builders and performances by Richie Supa & Friends opening for Vince Neil on the main stage. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital benefited from the day with a check presentation and thousands of toys brought by riders that will be distributed by the SFPC to children for a very special Christmas. The Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse 2008 year will be kicked off at Daytona Bike Week at the Dog House on Main Street. Other ‘08 locations include Sturgis, Myrtle Beach, Laconia, Biketoberfest and Fort Lauderdale.

Title sponsor of the Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse is the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, South Florida’s leading entertainment destination, featuring 50 live-action poker tables and 2,400 of the most popular gaming machines on the casino floor including a new, non-smoking gaming room. For more information, call (954) 327-ROCK, 1-800-937-0010 or visit us online at www.seminolehardrockhollywood.com.

Other sponsors include Budweiser, Michael Lichter Photography, Bikernet.com, Biker Design, the Dog House, Thunder Road in Sturgis and Keyboard Carriage.

Music Predictions For 2008

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 4:30 am)

WGAL 8 Susquehanna Valley, PA
December 14, 2007

The New Year will likely translate into still more woe for the major record labels. After years of endemic music piracy continually nibbling away at their profits, the label honchos now have an entirely new problem to defend their livelihoods against: rock star defections.

Radiohead made headlines and caused a considerable stir in the music industry a couple of months ago when the British art-rockers announced they were forgoing signing a new record contract and were instead releasing their new album via download. That revelation was quickly followed by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor proclaiming that he would also seek other avenues to distribute music without major label muscle…..

In 2008, look for big acts like perhaps classic-rock vets Aerosmith, who are currently recording their final disc for Columbia Records (owned by Sony Music), to potentially make such a move. While the group’s audience is older than the iPod generation, the band is in many ways the prime candidate to strike out from the majors.

First, the band has a large and dedicated fanbase, which could support untraditional or less accessible distribution methods (Of course, what constitutes accessibility in today’s music world is often determined by what year you graduated from high school.) Secondly, the group has the financial resources to hire lawyers, computer professionals and others smart enough to figure out such a scenario. Lastly, the band members know that because of their popularity and the kind of deals they have with their labels, they command a lot of label resources. In an era rife with negative profit margins and layoffs, those resources are no longer as plentiful as they once were. It would just make sense for the band to control their own future and reap the majority of the profits.

Don’t look for record labels to disappear anytime soon, however. For newer and younger acts that aren’t yet established, record labels will remain important gatekeepers…..

“Hung out with Steven Tyler for a while last night. Gave him the Classic Rock magazine cover which he moaned about ‘I’m smiling to much,’ then I took great pleasure in telling him how good Led Zeppelin were - faultless… I even told him about John Bionelli being on second name terms with Jimmy Page. As John I and were standing in the corridor of the 02 Jimmy sees John, shakes his hand, and says ‘Bionelli…’ John emailed me ‘Hey I’m on second name terms with a member of Led Zeppelin….’ ”

“Read John Bionelli’s report on his trip to London on aeroforceone.com. It is very funny and all true. John did give Jimmy Page a card from Joe Perry and my friend Nori did run off to Japan with John’s Kiss award. It features a beautiful photo of John and Randy Johnson in the wilds of Cheam. Oh, and I did see Mr. Udo at the 02 as well, he’s always a pleasure to run into….”

News From The Road

Bustle in my Hedgerow

Just got back from London where I got to see Led Zeppelin at the 02 arena - thanks to Ross Halfin and Wilf Wright. Rock and Roll is alive and well my friends. What a great show this was. The whole weekend was awesome. It was a star studded event. I was told to meet Ross at a hotel in town where he was meeting his friend Randy and then we would go back to his place in Cheam to hang out before going to the show. I showed up a little early and waited for the Little General. In the distance I see Ross round a corner with his buddy Randy. I thought to myself, geez that looks just like Randy Johnson. It was him. He was a good foot and a half taller than our favorite shutterbug. I thought, why the hell is Randy Johnson hanging out with Ross Halfin? Well, it seems Randy is a huge (no pun intended) rock fan and also a big (no pun intended) Ross Halfin fan. He was going to Ross’s house to check out some of Ross’s prints. For a 6 foot 10 man Randy went through London virtually unnoticed. Londoners were more taken back from his humungous-ness than being one of major league baseball’s best pitcher of the last 20 years or so.

Me lounging with Randy
Photo by Nori the klepto at Casa Del Halfin

When we got to Ross’s house we were met by his houseboy Nori. Nori is an odd fellow. Straight from Japan. Nori has one eye, one good ear and one arm. I shit you not. Seems the fireworks are a little bit more powerful in Japan. He is a sweet guy however and when he opened the door he just about cried. Randy Johnson is just as popular in Japan than in the US. Listening to Randy and Ross talk I felt like I was in an up to date version of the Odd Couple. Now that would be a hit reality show. Are you listening VH1?

Right in front of Randy, Ross is asking me if he is any good? Is he as good as Babe Ruth? I just shook my head. The only thing I could come up with is he is the next best thing to Cy Young. Randy didn’t say anything but he didn’t disagree either. I then told Ross if Randy is like Cy Young then you would be like Ty Cobb, because Cobb was the meanest, dirtiest, hated player there was. Cobb’s legacy has sometimes been overshadowed by his surly temperament and aggressive reputation which was described as “daring to the point of dementia. I thought that fit Ross pretty well. Ross agreed.

We hung out at his place for a while to look at some of his vast bootleg and memorabilia collection. Ross gave me the award KISS won from the Classic Rock awards last month. He said that they didn’t pick it up so he grabbed it. I left the 7 lb. award at his house hoping to get it later. Nori promised to send me a rare KISS Japanese single of “Rock and Roll All Night.” We then headed off for the Tube to go to the show.

We arrived at the gig with hours to spare. I took the time to case the joint. I caught some of the celebs coming in the back door. Dave Grohl, Bill Wyman, Paul Rogers, Chad Smith, Oasis, Naomi Campbell and Jeff Beck to name a few. Holy shit this is unreal. As the crowd filled the empty arena you could feel the excitement in the air. Something similar to what I could only imagine someone who saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium.

My only task of the evening was to deliver a note to Jimmy Page from Joe Perry. I saw Ross standing close to the dressing room area and thought I would give it to a trusty messenger. As I was handing the note to Ross he said why don’t you give it to him yourself he’s right there. There he was in his stage clothes with a Gibson Les Paul slung over his shoulder. He greeted me by my surname and a smile. He took the note and disappeared back into his dressing room.

It was dangerously close to showtime and I had to find my seat. On my way I spotted Mr. Udo the famed Japanese promoter. I was just as happy to see him as I was Page. He asked how the band was doing and wished them well. I also said hi to Dick (Scatman) Carruthers who was filming the show for a DVD. Dick filmed Aerosmith’s Hard Rock show a few years ago. I can’t wait to see how this one comes out.

No caption needed…

After a short tribute video to Ahmet Ertegun, for whom the entire event was dedicated to, it was time for history. Out with a bang came “Good Times,” “Bad Times,” “Ramble On,” “Black Dog” with no let up. The band seem to be in mid tour form. It wasn’t until 2 hours and 10 minutes later that it was over. Will they ever play together again? It seems to be the magical question.

Led Zeppelin’s set list

After some after show parties at the venue I knew had to get back to my hotel and pack as I had an early morning flight. I left completely drained and with the last notes of Rock and Roll ringing in my head I realized I had left London with a boatload of memory’s and I had also left without the KISS award. I rang Ross after I got through customs in Boston to tell him to send it to me but he informed me that Nori had left to go back to Japan with his boatload of memory’s and with my KISS award packed safely in his carry on bag.

File this one under: Good Times…

Aerosmith frontman spreads antidrug message at benefit

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 4:43 am)

MiamiHerald.com, FL
December 10, 2007

Steven Tyler, lead singer for Aerosmith, says he is doing everything he can to help keep kids off drugs.”I want to pass the message to kids that it is so easy to smoke a joint, quit school and get into trouble, but that leads to nowhere and there are alternatives like the Boys & Girls Clubs that are paths to success,” Tyler said.

Tyler, hailed as one of the greatest rock frontmen of all time, was in town this weekend for the ninth annual Fort Lauderdale Harley-Davidson Bikers Bash, which raised money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County.

Tyler, a proud rock ‘n’ roll grandfather, said he got involved in the fundraiser through his friends Bruce Rossmeyer, owner of Fort Lauderdale Harley-Davidson, and Plantation’s Richie Supa, the acclaimed Aerosmith songwriter best known for the hit Amazing.

There is no easy way to beat any kind of addiction, stressed Tyler, 59, who has combatted drug and alcohol addiction most of his life.

“There is only one way to beat addiction: you have to hit bottom,” Tyler said. “You have to have some DWIs, get arrested, be humiliated, have your wife and children leave you, have your friends and band members walk away. Addiction is a one-way street to death, jail or insanity.”

The Bikers Bash, which took place Friday night at a private tent at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino near Hollywood, featured an acoustic set with Tyler, who sang Misery, Amazing, Pink and Chip Away the Stone, the latter a duet performed with Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil……

Joe Perry on “In the Name of Love: Africa Celebrates U2″

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 12:01 am)

USA Today
December 6, 2007

Bono’s humanitarian relief efforts on behalf of Africa have led a dozen of the continent’s top musical acts to record a tribute album to his band. In the Name of Love: Africa Celebrates U2, out April 1 on Shout! Factory, features acts ranging from Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo to hip-hop collective African Underground All-Stars. Highlights include Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir’s a cappella rendition of Pride (In the Name of Love), Les Nubians’ dublike rendering of With or Without You and guitarist Waldemar Bastos’ tender reading of Love Is Blindness. Aerosmith’s Joe Perry joins Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars for Seconds, a song from 1983’s War.

“A lot of the familiar hooks are there but played in cadences and with instruments that are indigenous to African people,” says co-producer Shawn Amos. “It’s a testament to how global U2 is, that you can instantly recognize a song when it has been deconstructed, translated and played with different instrumentation.” Some proceeds from album sales will benefit the Global Fund.

Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton accepted the Personal Achievement Award from Christopher Guest at the 2007 Boston Music Awards (BMAs), with two of the evening’s best jokes. “Turn that crap down,” he said of his entrance music of “Sweet Emotion”, and later, “I feel like I’m at home. This place is like another room in my house, except smaller.”

Tom received the Personal Achievement Award for winning his fight against cancer and also for his support in the community.

Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer was honorary chairman of the 2007 Boston Music Awards.

This year’s BMAs took place on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Orpheum Theater….

Tom Hamilton Receives Special Honor at Last Night’s BMA’s

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 12:02 am)

Boston Globe, MA
December 2, 2007

The Boston Music Awards were handed out last night at the Orpheum Theatre in a two and a half hour ceremony that found metal bands mingling with power popsters and scene veterans rubbing elbows with hot upstarts.

It may not be the Grammys but the BMAs have grit and heart and both were on display last night in the dozen performances and off the cuff acceptance speeches.

The returns of Bobby Brown- who watched the Berklee City Music All-Stars perform a medley of his hits before coming on to sing “Roni”- and Extreme were well-received and writer-director-actor Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap’s “Nigel Tufnel”) got as warm a greeting as any of the musicians when he came on to introduce the special honor being bestowed on Aerosmith bassist, and cancer survivor, Tom Hamilton.

Hamilton also got off the best quip of the night. Observing the theatre where he reunited with his bandmates in 1984 he said “it feels like another room in my house, only smaller.”

And the winners are…..

Joe Perry Talks Zeppelin in New Rolling Stone Article

November 30, 2007

In Rolling Stone magazine’s latest cover story, “The Return of Led Zeppelin,” eight artists offer their take on the impact of the iconic rock group.

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry offered this statement: “We learned the arena-rock sound from their records. Jimmy Page was so young when they made their first record, but he’d spent so much time in the studio, he had the whole thing mapped out in his head. He was like Eisenhower looking at Normandy Beach.”

Jimmy Page was honored with a Living Legend Award at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour awards in London in early November.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler paid tribute to the guitarist, who also received video messages from Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and guitar legend Les Paul.
