The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) funds cancer research around the globe with the goal of actually finding cures. The Foundation funded some of the earliest research that proved that reprogramming cancer cells worked, leading to the cure of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Since then, the Foundation has expanded its scope to include a wide range of cancers – lung, breast, melanoma, brain, colon, liver, and pancreas among others. Its 60 internationally-recognized scientists form a highly collaborative “Institute without Walls,” in which they share information and tools to speed the pace of research. Since its inception nearly 30 years ago, the SWCRF has supported and trained more than 160 internationally recognized scientists by awarding over $65 million in strategically focused grants. 87% of every dollar donated goes directly to their outstanding researchers.

For Those About to Rock!
Hey gang I thought I would give you a quick update on what’s going on.
Tom, Joey and Joe all met at the TD Banknorth Garden last week to catch AC/DC. The guys all went in to say hi to the Bad Boys from Australia before the show. If you have taken a tour of the Aero dressing rooms you know that Joey, Steven and Joe all have separate rooms. The reason for this is because Joey has a small practice pad in there and is constantly banging away to get loose. Joe usually is plugged in to an amplifier that could rival the PA at Gillette Stadium. Steven also has his own piece of real estate backstage. He has tons of clothes and gadgets to keep him busy before a show. Aerosmith gets to the venue most nights between 2 and half to 3 and a half hours before set time. ST was on vacation in FLA on this night and missed the show. He vows to catch another North America show soon. AC/DC were all in one big dressing room. The reason for this is that they get to the show less than an hour before they get onstage so it’s a good time to chat and tweak the set a bit.

The show was great. Brian Johnson who has a house a few miles from Joe in FLA was in fine voice. Angus was awesome as usual and Phil Rudd kept the solid beat going all night. I particularly like to watch Malcolm and Cliff Williams synchronized walks to the mics ala Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone. Joe was very impressed with the stage set up and took a few notes. You could see the 3 Aero amigos faces during the show and I couldn’t help but wonder if they were all wishing they were up on that Garden stage starting yet another chapter in the book of Aerosmith. I am still trying to get the blood stains out of my pillow case from my ears bleeding that night, but it was worth it.

Old Ross Halfin and his girl Friday Kaz were in town last week taking pictures of Joe for a new Guitar Magazine that comes out early next year. Ross had Joe posed with his horse Franz as well as his Lotus Super 7 and various guitars that mean a lot to him. Ross Halfin is a lot of things but a shitty photographer he is not. He took some beautiful shots at Joe and Billie’s house on a nice crisp fall New England day. Be on the lookout for this great new magazine which will be revealed in the coming months.

Tony and Joe in the Garage
Joe took part in a radio program honoring guitar builder and musician Les Paul this week. It should air sometime in December. Joe talked about his relationship with Les as well as Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Les Paul turned 93 this year!
Joey Kramer has donated one of his beautiful drum sets to the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. He will attend the live auction on Thursday Nov. 20th in NYC to give the drum set to the lucky winner. This set of drums has been around the world and has literally been beaten on by “Krame Dawg the Drum Wonder.”
Steven and Joe will fly out to LA to be a part of the American Music Awards on Sunday. They will give out the last award of the night I’m told. I also have orders from the 7 year old girl that sleeps in the room next to me that I am not to come home without an autograph from Miley Cyrus. What pressure!!!!!!
Brad’s tour with the Hendrix Experience has ended and sadly it ended on a bum note. Jimi Hendrix drummer Mitch Mitchell who along with fellow band-mate Billy Cox had just finished the tour when Mitch passed away in his hotel room in Portland Oregon. Brad had a blast on the tour and even stayed 2 weeks longer than he was suppose to. He is grateful he got the opportunity to play with Mitch and Billy and will miss his new friend terribly.
In the old days it was the vision of a Studer A800’s Scotch tape rolling around and around that got musicians excited but today it has been replaced by the gentle glow of a Mac computer. What is the world coming to? I miss those old machines and the hiss that came with recording on tape. Just my 2 cents.
See you on the Road!

Ross Halfin’s Diary
14 of November 2008
RossHalfin.com
November 12, 2008

“Flew to Chicago on the red eye, as it’s called, arrived at 5am, then straight on to Boston. Felt okay considering I only slept a couple of hours. Met at the airport by John Bionelli and Kazuyo, who’d flown in yesterday from London to ogle John. Drove out to Joe Perry’s house where I’m doing a photo shoot. It was a sunny autumn day, yellow, brown and red leaves on the trees and freezing cold.
I had a shower in Joe’s gym to wake up and John arranged for Donnie Shiteman to come over and towel me dry – one of the many things Donnie is an expert at and John always looks after his friends…
The last time I’d seen Joe was on a flight back from Russia, so both of us are a bit rusty getting going. Started out shooting him on his horse, Trigger (what else), a big black horse like the Death Dealer in the Frank Franzetta painting. Trigger was extremely flatulent – I asked Joe if it was him or the horse. I next got Joe with a Lotus Super 7. Now I know nothing about cars, but what I did know was it was freeeeeeeeeezing. My head was thumping and I had to force myself to focus on what I was doing. By this time, there was quite crowd watching me work – McGee, Jim Survis, Donnie Shiteman, now dressed as the Lone Ranger, hoping Joe was going to let him ride his horse.”

“Kazuyo did a group shot of all of us with John posing with Joe guitar playing I’ve Got The Rock And Rolls Again while McGee hummed along. We retired to the warmth of the Boneyard Studio to shoot Joe with guitars. Got him to dig out his Telecaster from The Joe Perry Project, his Strat from the 70s, used on Sweet Emotion, a Les Paul Jr which he used a lot in the 70s and on The Joe Perry Project. It’s been painted black with intricate inlays on the headstock that now say Joe Perry, he told me he broke the neck in temper at a Aerosmith show and has never taken it out of the house since.
Finish off the shoot with his motorbikes while Rock’n'roll John Bionelli played most of the Kiss catalog on Joe’s Tele. Left Joe in the studio working on the new Aerosmith album (I think…).
John drove Kaz and I back to Boston airport. We left him in tears. ‘Why don’t you stay for a few days? I always end up having to be nice to Russ Irwin and he’s the most boring man I know and he never pays for dinner.’ Tears were rolling down his cheeks… We both felt sad as we left our friend at check in. John was now singing I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing.
Off to Washington and then back to London. It was heart warming to see my Aero chums again. Back In The Saddle Again – maybe… ”

Aerosmith Drummer Returns to Berklee
09 of November 2008
Berklee.edu
November 6, 2008
Aerosmith dummer and Berklee alumnus Joey Kramer visited Berklee’s David Friend Recital Hall for a Q&A session with students.
Kramer attended Berklee in 1970, and, like many students in those days, left before finishing his degree in order to go on tour. Students asked not only about his practice techniques and advice for up-and-coming drummers, but also about the life experiences he gleaned from decades of performing.
Zildjian, Kramer’s sponsor, had a representative on hand with free merchandise for students….
For more on Aerosmith’s relationship with Berklee, read about Steven Tyler’s 2002 clinic and 2003 commencement address.
Photos by Phil Farnsworth

Kramer recounted his most memorable concert—his first drum solo, at Pontiac Stadium. He was scared, but took advice from Aerosmith’s former guitarist Raymond Tabano on how to build the solo, then stop when you reach the climax, rather than drawing it out.

“I fell victim to the lie that I was going to lose my fire if I got sober. It’s bullshit. It’s just an excuse. I enjoy my playing more now.”
“I never allowed myself to play while under the influence of drugs. I was an active drug addict and alcoholic for 20 years of my career. I went after sobriety the same way I went after music. I surrounded myself with the right people and worked the shit out of the program.”
For general practice, Kramer puts on headphones and plays along to Tower of Power; Earth, Wind & Fire; and James Brown. He practices time with a Michael Jackson record: “You’re automatically on time because it’s all machines.”
Advice for drummers: “Hit ‘em hard. Have fun. Follow your dream.”

Kramer hung out after the clinic to talk to students and sign autographs.

Aerosmith fan-site Aeroforceone.com has video footage of bassist Tom Hamilton talking about the concept art for the band’s self-titled first album that was released on January 13, 1973.
According to Wikipedia, the album was recorded in two weeks at Intermedia Studio in Boston, Massachusetts. The photo at left is the original cover, which misprinted the song ‘Walkin’ The Dog’ as ‘Walkin’ The Dig’. When a second pressing of the album was released in 1976, this error was corrected, and the cover replaced with a modified one made up entirely of the photo of the band members. This second pressing is the more commonly available version of the LP. When reissued on CD in 1993, a remastered version of the original first pressing artwork was used.

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler was the center of attention at Rogerson Communities’s annual fund-raiser at the Mandarin Oriental the other night. The event, supporting the nonprofit’s housing and health programs, was cochaired by bigwigs Jack Connors, John Fish, and Tom Glynn, and honored Sovereign Bank CEO Joe Campanelli and wife Carolyn (above, with Tyler) for their continued support. Guests included Tufts Medical Center CEO Ellen Zane, NSTAR’s Tom May, restaurateur Darryl Settles, developer Steve Weiner, Home for Little Wanderers CEO Joan Wallace-Benjamin, and WBUR GM Paul LaCamera.

“Aerosmith main man Steven Tyler raising some dough for the Rogerson Communities affordable housing programs with outgoing Sovereign Bank chief Joseph Campanelli, his wife, Carolyn, and Boston bigwigs Jack Connors, John Fish and Tom Glynn at the new Mandarin Oriental hotel . . . Steven’s bassist, Tom Hamilton, frantically dialing his cell phone after he was turned away from the Coldplay concert at the TD Banknorth Garden. (Tom, we’re told, accidentally called his doctor before a Garden ticket-taker recognized him and let him in.) . . . “
