Joe Perry is one of 15 Iconic Les Paul Players
25 of January 2009
![]()
.
.
The Gibson Les Paul is one of the most recognizable guitars of all-time and the artists who brandish it seem to transcend age, era, gender and genre. From heavy metal enthusiasts to indie rock icons to reggae superstars, it seems like nearly every musical legend has strapped on a Les Paul at some point to take advantage of its signature sound. Sure, the axe is heavy, but that’s part of the secret to its tone—and if it’s good enough for the 15 legendary players listed below it should be good enough for you, right?
Joe Perry: Perry is known for a lot of things — including avoiding the aging process — but his most recognizable trait is the Les Paul that you can find hanging around his neck when he performs with Aerosmith. In fact, Perry is such a Les Paul enthusiast that in addition to playing nearly every variation of the axe for the past 30 years he also has his own Custom model. Perry reportedly has a collection of over 600 guitars and we’re betting that his Les Paul arsenal alone could give any Guitar Center in America a run for its money.

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler Deputized

WEST BOYLSTON — Aerosmith front-man Steven Tyler became an honorary deputy for the Worcester County Sheriff’s office last month and will help the organization’s charity programs.
Deputy Superintendent Jeffrey R. Turco confirmed Mr. Tyler met up with Worcester County Sheriff Guy W. Glodis and members of his staff.
The group took a tour of the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction facility and talked about several programs available for inmates, Deputy Turco said.
“He offered to assist us in the Deputy Sheriff’s Association,” he said.
Attempts to obtain a comment yesterday from Mr. Tyler were unsuccessful.
The Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s Association is a tax-exempt charitable organization that helps the sheriff’s community outreach and charity programs.
The sheriff spoke with Mr. Tyler about the substance abuse programs for inmates along with the Almost Home, Fathers and Families and Substance Treatment Opportunity programs, Deputy Turco said.
Mr. Tyler, a rock icon with his band that was formed in Boston, received a non-employee badge and does not have any official sheriff duties. Deputy Turco said intough economic times — especially with anticipated state budget cuts — it helps to have a celebrity endorse the charitable portion of the sheriff’s operation.
Deputy Turco said Mr. Tyler and Sheriff Glodis were put in touch with each other through a mutual friend.
This is not the first time the sheriff’s office brought in a celebrity as an honorary deputy.
Former tennis star Ivan Lendl and longtime Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda have been deputized in the past.
Deputy Turco said former CHiPs star Erik Estrada will also receive the honor in March.

Tom Hamilton Checks In with a Metallica Concert Recap

Saw the mighty Metallica the other night. Before the show we stopped in and shot the sh*t with James and Robert. This was my first time meeting Robert Trujillo He showed me a cool bass that he was going to be playing when they went on. We hung out in the Tuning Room for a little while and it was cool to catch up with James. They have a full blown friggin’ studio set-up in there ! Miked up drums and everything! Holy crap.
What a show. Those guys play so tight and strong. The production was intense. They’re great at the old school technique of having the lights really follow the music rhythmically. It was interesting to watch them work the huge “in the round” stage. They had coffin shaped lighting pods hanging from the ceiling shooting beams of intense light at sharp angles as they ascended and descended. They had some pyro bumps that were really different and they had some laser stuff that looked really cool. It’s not that easy. Lasers have been around for a while. They used them at one point where they made multicolored, razor sharp lines that snaked all over the stage.
Okay there’s the review.
We need to get out on the road so people can write some about us.

The Occasional Journal Of Admiral Perry
As many of you may or may not know, about 10 months ago I had a total knee replacement. I’ve had problems with my knee since I fell off the stage in Dallas about 20 years ago. Skiing and riding my motorcycles have added to my problems as well as putting on the best show that I could every night on the road. The last two tours I was in an extreme amount of pain and it took everything I had to give you the show I know you deserved. It finally took its toll, and I needed to have an artificial knee installed. Recovery was going well until about 6 weeks ago. It got infected! At this point we don’t know how or why, and after a series of tests, I had to undergo emergency knee surgery. Basically they flushed out the knee with a lot of antibiotics. I got the call at 11:00 AM on a Thursday that I needed surgery the next day. I was in the hospital that night and had the operation the next day. Recovery seems to be going well and I plan to get back in the studio in a couple of weeks. Postponing the Caracas show was unavoidable and we hope to get back down to South America very soon. As for the rest of the world, the exact tour dates have not been finalized but we hope to get back out on the road in late spring early summer.
Before the operation, my knee was hurting so bad that I couldn’t even ride my new Ducati motorcycle that Billie got me for Christmas; however, I was able to work in the studio and came up with quite a few cool new bits and pieces for the new record that we all are pretty excited about. Once I am able to walk around with crutches, I can’t wait to get back in the studio with my brothers.
Thanks for sticking by me–and the way we feel about the new record, it will be worth the wait.

Aerosmith’s Venezuela gig hobbled by bad knee
17 of January 2009

January 15, 2009

Aerosmith’s Joe Perry won’t be walking this way to Venezuela.
Instead of heading to a Feb. 1 show in Caracas, the 58-year-old lead guitarist detoured to a hospital for emergency knee surgery, forcing the Hall of Fame band to cancel what would have been its first gig in the country.
A band rep says Perry had a total knee replacement last March. But due to complications, he required a second operation, stat.
The “Sweet Emotion” purveyors are planning to reschedule the concert as soon as Perry’s bum knee heals and the band has room on its calendar.
“Playing Venezuela was my idea of a perfect way to start the New Year,” frontman Steven Tyler said in a statement. “But having heard Joe had to revisit the hospital this month, the band are truly disappointed we can’t be in Caracas, and we hope to see everyone there soon.”

Aerosmith are unable to perform their February 1 headlining show in Caracas, Venezuela at Estadio Olimpico as part of Solid Fest. This is due to lead guitarist Joe Perry having to undergo emergency surgery on his knee caused by unforeseen complications from a previous surgery on the same knee.
In March 2008, Perry underwent total knee replacement surgery, an operation he put off for two years so that he could fulfill the band’s live commitments and perform for fans.
Aerosmith was looking forward to their performance in Venezuela–especially because it would have marked their first-ever show in the country–and they hope everyone at the festival has a great time. The band is also hoping to announce a future show in Venezuela and they want to thank fans for their understanding and support.
Says Steven Tyler: “Playing Venezuela was my idea of a perfect way to start the New Year. But having heard Joe had to revisit the hospital this month, the band are truly disappointed we can’t be in Caracas, and we hope to see everyone there soon.”

Joe Perry battling infection
Aerosmith has canceled its Feb. 1 concert in Venezuela because Joe Perry is battling a serious infection in his knee. According to a source close to Perry, the guitarist had surgery on the knee at a Boston hospital last Friday, and has not yet been released. Doctors believe the infection stems from knee-replacement surgery Perry underwent 10 months ago. It’s expected that Steven Tyler’s Toxic Twin could need an IV and antibiotics for up to eight weeks. Media outlets in Caracas, where Aerosmith was supposed to play the Solid Fest, are erroneously reporting that Perry broke his knee in an accident Monday.

Steven Tyler hasn’t missed a thing—including fun at every altitude
Might it be that Steven Tyler, at 60, is just counting the days until his Social Security payments kick in so he can finally retire from his job touring with Aerosmith, his 39-year-old band? How else to explain how Yonkers’ mouthiest son—born Steven Tallarico—continues, facing the indignity of women a fraction his age thrusting all those naked breasts in his face, not to mention the requisite detoxing and delousing the lifestyle requires. Shuffleboard and obit scanning await! Why, just last year, there was that brawl in a Florida nightclub in which his thirtysomething girlfriend, Erin Brady, fought with another woman over his skinny carcass. Wouldn’t an earlybird special and a schvitz be a nice alternative to this madness? As one of the all-time great rockers once sang, dream on.
ELLE: What can you tell me about your first sexual experience?
Steven Tyler: It was at the age of seven with twins.
ELLE: Where does a boy go to find naughty prepubescent twins?
ST: They sat next to me in the church choir. They were French.
ELLE: At that age, I can’t imagine you got the full ménage à trois.
ST: They took me home one day, and we had a you-show-me-yours-I’ll-show-you-mine session. Isn’t that great? You know, I look at their pictures now and think to myself, How much sweeter does it get? And isn’t it crazy that my ex-wife Teresa was a twin and my girlfriend now is a twin?
ELLE: So in your marriage to Teresa, was there ever any serious talk of bringing the other twin into the bedroom?
ST: I asked her for years and I got so smacked down.
ELLE: Since you’ve had a couple marriages fail, I wondered: If you could will your voice to be heard in the head of every man a split second before he pops the question, what would you say?
ST: “Don’t get fuckin’ married.” And “Lie till you die.”
ELLE: Over the years, your relationship with Aerosmith’s guitarist Joe Perry has been more contentious than many bad marriages, but you still play together. How do you manage that relationship?
ST: There’s that famous saying, “This thing is bigger than both of us.” Some guys will have terrible feelings about an ex-wife they had a child with, but after giving birth to something so beautiful, how can you hate that person? We’ve given birth to those songs.
ELLE: You wrote the pointed lyrics of “Sweet Emotion”—“You talk about things that nobody cares/ You’re wearing out things that nobody wears”—about Joe’s then-wife Elyssa. Why?
ST: I was pissed off. We had all been living in a house and writing many great songs together, and then he moved in with her. Suddenly, I only saw him at rehearsals. I’d lost my guitar player.
ELLE: How did he react to those lyrics?
ST: I don’t think he put it together. Guitar players never listen to lead singers.
ELLE: When you and Joe competed for women, who won?
ST: Well, we didn’t compete, but we did share. And the crabs won.
ELLE: In Walk This Way, the oral history of Aerosmith, the band’s engineer, Rabbit Hansen, said that band members weren’t to accept oral sex for the last 10 days of tour so as not to spread venereal diseases to girlfriends at home.
ST: That wasn’t the band’s rule. You didn’t have sex for 10 days at the end of tour, but that was so you’d be sure to go home with a full cup of chowder. If you didn’t, you were definitely suspect.
ELLE: Women know that men touch themselves. Isn’t that a good excuse for, uh, low chowder levels?
ST: That only holds with a woman the first couple times.
ELLE: In the ’70s, you once told an interviewer, “I’ll tell you what’s fun—finding the right stewardess and turning her upside down in the back of a plane.” Did this actually happen? I mean, aren’t flight attendants too busy to be nailing passengers?
ST: Are you kidding? They would tell me, “I’ll meet you in the bathroom in 10 minutes.”
ELLE: Do you think post-9/11 this might be harder to pull off?
ST: The bathroom’s still there. You just open the door and walk in. But if it happens now, it’s usually on night flights.
ELLE: Noncelebrities find sex with new partners exciting because of that feeling of “I can’t believe this person is willing to do this thing with me.” As a rock star who’s fending off flight attendants, do you feel like you miss out on that excitement?
ST: No, because you still think to yourself, My God, I can’t believe this is happening. You don’t ever take it for granted, unless you’re Gene Simmons and so full of yourself.
ELLE: Has any female celebrity ever shunned your advances?
ST: Never. I’m a persistent motherfucker. I’m very sensual and very rhythm-oriented and into poetry. Women can feel that.
ELLE: Tell me a story of public humiliation that involves a woman.
ST: I can’t really think about anything other than things I really don’t want to talk about—like divorces, or my girlfriend, Erin, getting in a fight in a club defending my honor, and then people saying she got me on drugs, which is the furthest thing from the truth. That’s the press for you.
ELLE: How exactly did your girlfriend defend your honor?
ST: A girl was sitting on my lap too long, and my girlfriend just threw her off. It turned into a brawl.
ELLE: But the question remains: Why was this girl sitting in your lap for so long?
ST: That might have been my fault.

Plant-less Led Zeppelin

Detroit Free Press, MI

Not sure if this could really be called Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant, but Jimmy Page’s manager Peter Mensch tells 6Music that Zeppelin will record and tour if the band can find the right new singer. Mensch says Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham (son of original drummer John) did the show at London’s O2 Arena in 2007 with Robert Plant and “that they had a really good time rehearsing, the three of them, before Robert showed up. And they decided that if they could find a singer that they thought would fit their bill — whatever their bill was at this stage in their career — that they’d make a record and go on tour.”
Rumored front men include former Soundgarden voice Chris Cornell and Steven Tyler, but Tyler and his group Aerosmith are reportedly pumped to hit the studio and record their 15th album, according to the band’s Web site.

Aerosmith “Can’t Wait To Get Back Into The Studio,” Says Drummer

Aerosmith “can’t wait” to start recording their new album, the band’s 15th LP and first containing original material since 2001’s Just Push Play. “Today is the first day Tom and I are getting back together. We just rehearsed for two hours and it feels so good,” Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer and bassist Tom Hamilton write in a news update on the band’s official Website. “We can’t wait to get back into the studio and get back out on the road to do what we do best. We’ll check in from time to time and give you progress on how things are going.”
The band is planning to tour in 2009, with a performance at Venezuela’s Solid Fest on February 1st the only announced date so far. However, guitarist Brad Whitford said in October that the band has “been offered to go out and do a tour next year starting in March, I guess. Providing the sky doesn’t fall, that’s what we’ll be doing.” Whitford couldn’t elaborate whether the band would perform new songs on the road or not. Steven Tyler has since hinted that the tour will begin in April.
Aerosmith have kept their fans occupied while they awaited the follow-up to 2004’s cover album Honkin’ On Bobo. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith ended up selling more copies in its debut week than any other Aerosmith album. The band was constantly in the news as well, whether it was Steven Tyler checking into rehab or suing bloggers who pretended to be Steven Tyler, to Joe Perry and his outspoken support of Republican Presidential candidate John McCain.

“Now that 2008 is in the pop-culture scrapbook, we know it was a huge year for heroes and superheroes, courtesy of James Bond, Indiana Jones, Batman and Iron Man….. So what awaits us down the line in ‘09? Which movies, tours, CDs and books will we be talking about? My crystal ball is in the shop, but a casual survey of release dates posted by movie studios, Amazon, record labels, Billboard and other sources indicates plenty to get excited about. More, in fact, than we can squeeze into one puny story. This just skims the surface, but it’s a good starting point for those who like to look ahead….. ”
