Steven Tyler’s Performance With Chris Botti Airs on PBS Today
28 of February 2009

February 26, 2009
“Think back to mid September. I told you all about the taping of a great music special hosted by trumpet player Chris Botti with the Boston Pops and a lot of stars.
Sting, Steven Tyler, Josh Groban and Yo Yo Ma were just some of the guests featured over the two night event at Boston’s illustrious Symphony Hall….. All of this you will see beginning Saturday [02/28/09] as PBS starts airing Chris Botti and Friends as a fundraiser. Last week, I watched a screening of the finished show with Chris and his manager, the great drummer Bobby Colomby from Blood, Sweat & Tears…..
….The special is pretty special for other reasons. Sting — blonde and just rested from the end of the Police tour — shows why he’s a rock star and a musician for all seasons. His ‘If I Ever Lose My Faith in You’ is just spectacular, as is his work with YoYo Ma on ‘Fragile.’ Steven Tyler is absolutely wild on the Aerosmith hit ‘Cryin’ and then very moving as he sings Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Smile’ to his elderly father in the front row of the audience…..”

2009 Dirico Motorcycles First Look
27 of February 2009
Motorcycle USA
February 26, 2009
Having a personality like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler as your pitch man gives Dirico Motorcycles a fighting chance to make it in a carnivorous market.

It’s amazing what can result from a great day in the saddle, a few cold beers afterwards and spirited conversation amongst friends. Hell, it might even result in the founding of a motorcycle company.
Such is the case with Dirico Motorcycles USA. What started as a fantastic ride through the mountains of New Hampshire between Steven Tyler, his brother-in-law Mark Dirico, and long-time buddy Stephen Talarico, ended with the idea to build and market their own motorcycle. Of course it didn’t hurt that Tyler is the frontman for the popular band Aerosmith, Mark just happens to be a master engineer, and Talarico owns several Harley-Davidson dealerships, a custom shop, and tons of manufacturing equipment.
The company officially launched in January 2008 under the name Red Wing Motorcycles. But it appears that a Japanese manufacturer who flies a red wing under its banner contacted them about use of the name. The Red Wing moniker the new motorcycle company was marketing its bikes under came from Aerosmith’s corporate identity from the ‘60s. Just check out their old album covers (remember ‘Get Your Wings’). But the Japanese manufacturing giant didn’t want to let the name go and the Dirico gang didn’t want a long, ugly court battle, so they switched it over to Mark’s last name in 2009.
“Mark is the brains behind the design of these motorcycles,” said Stephen Talarico, president of Dirico Motorcycles USA.
Talarico also owns AC Custom Motorcycles in Manchester, NH, a custom shop that has been building a name for itself on the East Coast for over a decade, and was the one who just happened to have an extra frame and engine laying around for Mark to start tinkering on. Not long after, Mark had worked up the first prototype. Two years and countless miles later, the bugs had been worked out of seven or eight more prototypes until they had the motorcycles dialed in.
Dirico Motorcycles USA debuted two motorcycles in 2008, the Red Wing Pro Street and the Retro, and followed up their initial effort with three more models in 2009. One of them, the Speedster, just made its first public appearance at the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo. The ‘Retro Flyer’ has all the accoutrements of a classic cruiser – a beefy Springer front end, deep-welled fenders, black-spoked wheels, a vintage-looking round air cleaner, and spacious floorboards. It sources a Harley-Davidson Twin Cam 110B engine with 1450cc of power mated to a 5-speed H-D left-side drive transmission, all packaged neatly within a Kraft-tech frame. Small details like its fat-bottomed black leather seat and the decorative leather strap that runs up the tank-mounted console I’ll wager are Tyler’s styling touches. I do know for a fact that the brilliant orange paint scheme is straight from the creative mind of the singer. Steve Cantos out of Massachusetts is the man responsible for the paint. With a little coaching from Tyler, of course.
“Steven worked directly with Cantos, describing things like a sunset he had seen during a ride while Cantos does the work of capturing Steven’s visions in paint. That’s how we came up with the oranges and reds that we use,” Talarico stated. “There was a blue where Steven was riding with Kid Rock up in Michigan and they had come up to a bar. It was a Blue Martini, and that inspired the blue that we used on the Pro Street. Steven’s got a memory like a steel trap and he can translate that into the art,” he added.
Dirico deliberately decided to go with Harley-Davidson components on its motorcycles in part due to Tyler’s international fame.
“We figured that if we were going to build a motorcycle that we should go with Harley-Davidson components because you can service them just about anywhere all over the world. We hope to avoid servicing problems that have plagued other custom builders. We have a dealer in St. Petersburg, Russia, that can plug in a diagnostic tool and has immediate access to parts and doesn’t have to worry about availability,” Talarico said. “But it’s not just a bunch of components thrown together.”
Dirico’s two other new models are the 2009 Flyer and the 2009 Pro Street. The Flyer has lines that conjure images of an Art Deco 1930s Indian Chief to me, minus the thin pan seat. Similar to the Speedster, the Flyer uses an H-D mill, the 88 cubic-inch Twin Cam B, and the same 5-speed H-D tranny. The Pro Street, on the other hand, is long and low and runs with more power. It utilizes Harley’s larger 103 cubic-inch, 1690cc engine to go along with a Baker 6-Speed Right Side Drive. The front tire is raked out more and sports more aggressive cast wheels and a custom-style forward-facing air filter. It also sports the Blue Martini paint that was inspired by Tyler’s ride with Kid Rock.
While timing for the introduction of the company might not be opportune, Talarico has been focusing on establishing a presence in the international market, setting up a distributor in Japan and a dealer in Russia. He’s also in negotiations with a group from Argentina right now. Low overhead costs also work to their advantage. Talarico already owned all the equipment and tooling necessary to start manufacturing and was familiar with production techniques thanks to running AC Customs for the last dozen years.
Dirico also offers something that no other motorcycle company has – Steven Tyler as a selling point. Who wouldn’t want to own a motorcycle signed by the legendary lead vocalist of the renowned rock-and-rollers, Aerosmith? Dirico plans on showing its motorcycles at future concerts, which means that you can market your bike directly to 50,000 customers at one show, so why not send out a couple of your motorcycles to accompany the tour? Dirico is also building a bike for Sturgis, the official 2009 Black Hills Classic raffle motorcycle, to be presented by the Chamber of Commerce with proceeds benefitting the city of Sturgis. It is a prestigious commission. Talarico also said Aerosmith is going to play at the Buffalo Chip and Tyler will be hanging out at the rig where Dirico will have its wares on display.
“Steven loves it up there,” Talarico said.
Besides Sturgis, Dirico also plans to hit up some of the other big motorcycle events, like Daytona and Laconia. After talking to Talarico, we’re keeping our fingers crossed about a First Ride article in the future, and a chance to rumble over some of his favorite roads through the mountains of New Hampshire.

Joey Kramer Mention – Reeling and Rocking at the House Of Blues
25 of February 2009
Boston Globe, MA
February 23, 2009
An exuberant bunch warmed the House of Blues at its opening bash Saturday night, and lots of familiar faces were in the crowd – on stage and off. Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters tore up the stage – along with Reverend Lee’s gospel group – as patrons took full advantage of the open bar. (We spotted more than one overwhelmed young lady, uh, on the floor. . .) Then the Blues Brothers – Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi – stormed the joint around 11 p.m., joined by James Montgomery and Carly Simon, who more than pulled off an old-school full-body shimmy. Also spotted in the melee: Aerosmith’s Joey Kramer, former Patriot Christian Fauria, James Taylor’s sister, Kate Taylor, convention center director Jim Rooney and president Pat Moscaritolo……

Tom Hamilton Checks In – Brendan and Disney

February 18, 2009
The big news is that we had our first meeting and strategy session with our producer Brendan O’Brien. We’ve been wanting to work with him for a while. The meeting came on the heels of the band all working together for the first two weeks. Things are moving along and it’s now on the fast track. We had a day where we all got to listen to everyone’s songs and ideas. In the next few weeks we’ll be narrowing down what we’ve got. We can already see things coming into focus – even as new ideas are popping up right and left. Joe survived his knee operation and has obviously done lots of playing during his recuperation.
On a personal note – I went to Disney World this past weekend and took a few spins on the Rockin’ Rollercoaster. I couldn’t stop feeling the irony of the fact that we have a ride and it’s been there so long. Still not quite used to it!
Our guide did a masterful job of moving us around so I could spy on all the people getting ready to go. We went out front and watched everyone in line listening to our music and anticipating the experience. Then we snuck into the area where you see a film of us “in the studio.” It was dark enough so I could actually stand there and watch it. I haven’t looked at that footage for a few years. My hair was a bit on the short side but I was re-satisfied by my choice of the blue satin shirt.
After that we quickly infiltrated the area where the riders actually get into their seats. It was hilarious seeing people nervously try to get ready for the intensity of the ride. It was awesome hearing the screams of the recently launched competing with “Back in the Saddle” screaming out of the sound system. Then it was our turn. I’ve been on the thing many times but not for a while. Just like everyone else my pulse rate leaped. I got the full force of that “uh oh here we go” feeling.
When it first starts you rush to the beginning of a tunnel and stop…and wait for what feels like an eon. Then out of nowhere, just as your head’s about to pop from adrenalin, a massive mechanism flings you down the track like a kid throwing a paper plane. You hit sixty miles an hour in well under four seconds. After that, you’re in the hands of physics as you plunge into 4g loops and wickedly exhilarating corkscrews for two solid minutes. At the end of the ride you wind up, where else?…The gift shop. I was still lightly stunned from our second or third turn as I wandered in. That’s when the recognition factor kicked in. Pens, paper, t-shirts and snapshot cameras came up out of nowhere for a frantic fifteen minute autograph and picture blast. It was almost as scary and fun as the ride!

Aerosmith to House GOP: Don’t Use Our Song
18 of February 2009
TPMDC
February 17, 2009
Poor House Republicans. They were pretty psyched yesterday about that new troops-rallying video from Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) that used Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle” to declare that “The House GOP is back” thanks to the party’s unanimous opposition to the stimulus.
But unfortunately, Aerosmith wasn’t feeling the love. Cantor’s clip has been pulled from YouTube after a copyright infringement claim made by Stage Three Music, which owns the rights to “Back in the Saddle.”
The GOP’s use of the tune “was something we, as the publishers, didn’t approve and would not have approved without going to the writers,” Connie Ashton, director of copyright and licensing at Stage Three, told me. “Aerosmith did not approve of its use and also wanted to have it taken down,” she added.
Ashton added that House Republicans never contacted Stage Three to put in a request for use of “Back in the Saddle.” Maybe they assumed it was okay because Joe Perry endorsed McCain last year.

While his band’s been on hiatus, Steven Tyler has managed to stay busy. We’re told the Aerosmith singer is hard at work on his memoir. (You’ll recall that Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins, bid more than $2 million for the rights.) As you might expect, Tyler isn’t doing the typing himself. A source close to the screamer tells us that David Dalton is ghost writing Tyler’s tell-all. Not exactly a newcomer to rock writing, Dalton’s authored well-received books about Janis Joplin, James Dean, and Jim Morrison, and countless articles about Marianne Faithfull, The Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan. Apparently, a draft of the book is due in June.

What a great week. We been in there bangin’ around. It feels great to all be in the studio once again. The ideas are flying. We have a bunch of stuff that’s most of the way there and some that’s in the infant stage. We’re really excited to be working with Brendan O’Brien one of our favorite producers. So the news should come in bigger chunks now. We’re on the hunt!
By the way, Check out an artist on You Tube named Alex Nobile. A good friend of mine told me that I should hear her sing. She’s fourteen and writes her own songs. When I heard her first one I was knocked out. I wanted to get a recording of it so next time I brought a nice mic, a nice pre, and my laptop. She sang the song in one take and right on the beat. I took that into my studio and recorded the instruments and backing vocals. Then we did a quick video at the warehouse. It came out kind of nice. Check it out.

Joe Perry Talks New Album and Tour
08 of February 2009
Aero Force One
From: ABC News Radio
February 6, 2009
We told you yesterday that Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry had issued a statement saying his recovery from emergency knee surgery was going well and the band are preparing to hit the recording studio. Well, Perry phoned in last night to provide some more details.
First, Perry says the band began rehearsing together last week, quote, “going over some of the new stuff.” And he says they’ll be entering the studio soon, with producer Brendan O’Brien — who has worked with Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, The Offspring, Bruce Springsteen, Audioslave, Velvet Revolver and AC/DC, just to name a few. This will be the band’s first time working with the super-producer, but Perry says they’ve “wanted to work with him for a long time.”
Perry also says they’ll be taking an old-school approach to this album, recording live in the studio. Because of that, he hopes recording will be finished in time for them to launch a North American tour on June 1st.
Preparing For New Album
“We started rehearsing last week. The band’s been all gathered back together and we’ve been at it, going over some of the new stuff. You know, we’ve got a lot of material that needs just to be gathered.”
Brendan O’Brien To Produce New Album
“We’ve got Brendan O’Brien onboard to produce this one and we’re real excited about it. We’ve wanted to work with him for a long time.”
Only As Good As Your Next Record
“We’re kind of late bloomers I think. I always feel like we’ve got a better song in us. We just kind of wipe away everything that we’ve done ‘til now…and you’re only as good as your next record.”
Recording Live This Time
“We’re gonna be doing it more like we used to do the old records which is the band playing live in the studio. That part is really exciting to me. We haven’t really done a real original studio record in a long time.”
Want To Finish Album Before June Tour
“We’re planning on going out June 1st and touring the states. I think that’s the first leg we got planned. We’re gonna try and blow through this record and make it the way we used to make records. And with spontaneity and trying to capture that on-the-spot energy and then hopefully get it done before we get on the road.”
Aerosmith Taps Producer Brendan O’Brien For New Album

Blabbermouth.net, NY
February 6, 2009
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry told ABC ePrep yesterday (Thursday, February 5) that he and his bandmates have already gotten together to work on material for the group’s new album. “We started rehearsing last week,” the guitarist revealed, adding “the band’s been all gathered back together. And we’ve been at it and going over some of the new stuff,”
Aerosmith will head into the recording studio soon with producer Brendan O’Brien, who has previously worked with Velvet Revolver, Rage Against The Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC and Stone Temple Pilots among others. Perry told ABC ePrep, “We’re real excited about it, we’ve wanted to work with him for a long time.” The guitarist added that they’re hoping to get back to their roots by “doing it more like we used to do the old records, which is the band playing live in the studio.”
Joe also revealed Aerosmith are planning to kick off a North American tour around June 1, and hope to have the album completed by then.
Perry recently issued a statement regarding the emergency knee surgery he recently underwent, which forced the band to cancel a February 1 headlining show in Caracas, Venezuela. As previously reported, Perry had the surgery because of complications from a knee replacement he had done last year. He wrote, “Recovery was going well until about six weeks ago. It got infected! At this point we don’t know how or why, and after a series of tests, I had to undergo emergency knee surgery. Basically, they flushed out the knee with a lot of antibiotics. I got the call at 11 a.m. on a Thursday that I needed surgery the next day. I was in the hospital that night and had the operation the next day.”
Perry said that postponing the show in Venezuela was “unavoidable,” but that the band hopes to hit the road in late spring or early summer.
Aerosmith’s next studio album will be its first set of all-original material since 2001’s “Just Push Play”.
Joe Perry of Aerosmith in ‘Fade In’ Magazine

“Fade In” is a national movie magazine. This is what Joe had to say about the movie “A Hard Day’s Night.”
A Hard Day’s Night
Joe Perry (Aerosmith) “I was always an outsider. I never really fit in. I was the guy standing against the wall at every school dance. But when I saw this movie in 1963-64, and saw the camaraderie these guys had as a band, it made me want to pursue music. I was going to be a marine biologist. I love the ocean. I didn’t snorkel, but had always loved [Jacques] Cousteau and thought maybe I could be a part of that. But I was also intrigued by the guitar. And I ended up being in a band with all of my friends. There’re a lot of films I love, but I wouldn’t have followed the course that I did if I hadn’t seen this film.”
Joe Perry Comments About Recovery

Joe Perry’s recovery at home from his recent emergency knee surgery is going very well; the Aerosmith guitarist is continuing to fight off the infection that had suddenly developed after he had an artificial knee installed around 10 months ago (as a result of a stage-fall 23 years ago in Dallas). Next, the Aerosmith guitarist will soon head into the studio with his band-mates to record a much-anticipated new album, for which there are already a “few cool new bits and pieces” in the works, says Joe. And getting back on the road—in late spring/early summer–is very much on his mind: “The last two tours I was in an extreme amount of pain, and it took everything I had to give you the show I know you deserved,” says Joe, who adds: “I am looking forward to playing shows without any pain in my knee for the first time in three years.” For Joe, the train keeps a rollin’ indeed.
