Rock for Sobriety

Spinner, NY
May 12, 2008

Put variations of Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Linkin Park and Guns N’ Roses on the same bill and you’ve got a serious rock show. Last Friday night, about a thousand lucky fans got to see just that as Slash and Cooper were honored for their sobriety by MusiCares.

Steven Tyler, who was on hand to present the From the Heart honor to Slash, talked to Spinner about their friendship before the show. “They opened up for us one night,” he recalled. “We were backstage and I said, ‘Listen you guys, we got like five years sober, so if you guys got anything on you and you bring it in my dressing room, I’m gonna have to leave. I’m gonna get real pissed off and kick your a–.’ But they found their own road.” Asked then how proud he was of Slash, Tyler responded, “Forget it, beyond belief. He’s been through hell and high water, and he’s come out the other side.”

During his acceptance speech, Slash, who, in true rock star fashion left his sunglasses and top hat on, thanked his “awesome” wife and two little boys, as well as “music in general since it’s been my underlying motivation for survival.” Letting his guitar do most of the talking though, he jammed with his mates in Camp Freddy for a ridiculous all-star celebration that started with Cheap Trick vocalist Robin Zander killing versions of the classic ‘Surrender’ and ‘Gonna Rase Hell,’ continued with Chester Bennington crooning Cooper’s ‘Eighteen’ to the icon. The jam ended with Tyler coming out for two songs, including a standing o-inducing version of ‘Whole Lotta Love,’ that also featured Jerry Cantrell.

After accepting his award for 26 years sobriety, Cooper quipped, “The last thing in this business you wanna do is follow Steven Tyler on vocals.” But modesty aside, Cooper takes a back seat to noone onstage, as he proved with a rollicking set that started off with ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy,’ and included a joyous ‘Billion Dollar Babies.’ And then what else could the night end with but Cooper being joined on stage by Slash for a sing-along version of ‘School’s Out’?

“…Finally I have to say that the MAP Awards show we played was amazing. A HUGE thanks to Patrick Cornell, who came down with me and shot a few killer photos for me during the soundcheck. Thanks Patrick - you rock!! We played five songs - Surrender (with Robin Zander), Gonna Raise Hell (with Robin Zander and Wayne Kramer), I’m Eighteen (with Chester Bennington and Billy Duffy), Mama Kin (with Steven Tyler and Duff McKagan) and Whole Lotta Love (with Steven Tyler and Jerry Cantrell). Dave was unable to be at the show, so Slash stepped in and played lead with us on all the songs. Alice Cooper and Slash were honored with Awards and the whole night was fantastic. Thank you to Harold, Chris, Wynnie and all at MAP for making the evening such a huge success, and thank you for inviting us to be a part of it all…”

As a historic Boston venue in its own right and the location where Aerosmith has made multiple appearances and reunited, the Orpheum Theater (Boston) was an ideal fit as a venue for Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Neversoft worked with the band as well as with The Orpheum crew to faithfully bring this venue to life in the upcoming game.

The songs featured in this venue are Complete Control by The Clash, Personality Crisis (re-record) and the following three tracks by Aerosmith: Livin’ on the Edge, Ragdoll and Love in an Elevator. Both Livin’ on the Edge and Ragdoll reached the Top 40 on Billboard’s Top 100.

The new video highlights both the venue and these tracks.

Aerosmith Exclusive to Guitar Hero

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 12:01 am)

If you’re looking forward to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith in late June, you’re probably a fan of the legendary band and a fan of music-based video games. You probably enjoy Rock Band as well as Activision’s franchise. However, if you want your Aerosmith fix, it seems you’re gonna have to stick with Guitar Hero.

Only one song, “Train Kept a Rollin’,” is available for Rock Band, but any Aerosmith tracks in the future will be exclusive to Guitar Hero titles. Evidently, Newsweek received confirmation from an Aerosmith publicist and Activision PR that the band’s songs are cemented firmly in the GH realm “for an unspecified period of time.” This only makes sense, as the band has a Guitar Hero game with their name in the title. Of course, this erases the possibility of future Aerosmith songs going up as downloadable content for Rock Band, and it begs the question: will other artists go exclusive with either GH or RB? Are the publishers scrambling about right now, trying to nail down exclusive rights? We’re not sure, but we imagine the war has already begun…

Look for more on Guitar Hero: Aerosmith as time goes on; probably after the Grand Theft Auto IV craze has had a chance to die down a bit.

Aerosmith, with Tom Hamilton, Steven Tyler, Ray Tabano and Joe Perry, plays its first show, at Nipmuc Regional High School…
(Photo courtesy of Aerosmith biography “Walk This Way”)

MENDON - Aerosmith may only play huge arenas and stadiums now, but the Boston band had to start somewhere, and that first gig took place at none other than the Miscoe Hill School gymnasium.

The location, which was the Nipmuc Regional High School gymnasium at the time, is gaining prominence again as it is featured in the new “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” game, according to a story on the band’s Web site.

Fans of the band and the game at Miscoe Hill School, from students right up through the principal, said they are pumped that the school will find itself in millions of homes when the game is released in June.

Roy Spindel, a counselor at the school, was at the first show back in 1970, when he was a Nipmuc student.

“I remember being blown away by their sound,” Spindel said. “When they were playing, it seemed obvious they were going to go some place. All I could think of was, ‘this is what it must feel like when the Rolling Stones play.’ They sounded like they had been together forever.”

The show probably cost about a dollar, Spindel said, adding that his brothers’ band was supposed to play that night but they were bumped for Aerosmith….

Rock legend Steven Tyler and a mystery male friend decided to go out for a little shopping yesterday. First Steven hit up Fred Segal in West Hollywood, California, which is where we caught up with him to snap a few fotos! Steven was looking very much the aging rock star (in a good way) in his floppy hat and torn jeans. We loved it when Steven decided to get a bit goofy and posed with his hat. Nice to see that the man’s still got it!

‘Guitar Hero: Aerosmith’ Lowdown — Why The Boston Band Is Getting Its Own Game

Posted by Administrator in Uncategorized ( at 12:01 am)

MTV.com
April 17, 2008

(Photo: RedOctane/ Activision)

Earlier this week, game developers from Activison came through New York City to show off the upcoming “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” game and to answer the question “Why Aerosmith?”

A single band has never had a version of the best-selling “Guitar Hero” game to itself. But Aersomith, at least in name, is getting just that. Aaron Habibipour, a producer on the game, told MTV News that the famous Boston band got the gig because they are one of the top-five “holy grail” groups, according to music fans polled by Activision.

Technically, “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” — which ships for the Xbox 360, PS2, PS3 and Wii in June — isn’t just Aersomith. The game will feature more than 40 songs, with 60 percent being hits from the band’s decades-long career. The other 40 percent will be from Aersomith contemporaries like Cheap Trick and Mott the Hoople. The Aerosmith songs will all be masters, except for three, including “Make It” and “Movin’ Out,” which the band rerecorded for the game.

Since “GH III” came out just last fall, it’s logical to assume that the “Aerosmith” version is just a moderately tweaked version of “III.” Habibipour said “Aersomith” is not simply a reskinned version of “III,” noting that new costumes for “GH III” characters appearing in “Aerosmith” have been added, six new venues have been created for the game, and the menus and interfaces have been redone. Difficulty levels have also been tweaked. “We went back and retuned the game so it was back to where people felt it needed to be,” Habibipour said. That doesn’t mean the game has been dramatically altered — “medium is not the old easy” — but the developers listened to “GH III” players who felt like the game might have had too many brick walls for casual fans.

“Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” features six venues, the first based on Nipmuc Regional High School where the band played its first gig more than 30 years ago. The other venues are based on the band’s albums, including a stage with a giant jack-in-the-box inspired by Toys in the Attic. New York club Max’s Kansas City was also recreated as a venue.

Lead singer Steven Tyler did motion capture of his stage moves and facial expressions. The camera that filmed him was also motion-captured, so that the game can render moments like when Tyler grabs it. Guitarist Joe Perry selected the guitars for each set.

One of the additions from “III,” boss battles against the likes of Slash and Tom Morello, won’t be as apparent in “Aerosmith.” The developer said there will be only one boss battle, though he wouldn’t say who it’s against (nor does he deny that it’s hard to guess).

The new game has been in development since last year, before “III” was completed. It was helped along into existence by the fact that Joe Perry’s son is a big “Guitar Hero” fan. According to Habibipour, Perry saw his son playing an earlier “Guitar Hero” and wanted to know why Aerosmith wasn’t a part of it. When Activision was looking to include an Aerosmith song in “GH III” — and wasn’t happy with a cover version that was available — Perry himself called up to volunteer his involvement.

Centering a game on the band made sense, Habibipour said, but he clarified that band-specific “Guitar Hero” games do not represent the sole future of the franchise. “It’s its own path,” he said. Band-specific “GH” games and full “GH” sequels can co-exist, he said, in parallel paths of development.

“Guitar Hero: Aersomith” ships in June, the same month that the series’ DS debut, “Guitar Hero: On Tour” ships. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game were developed by Neversoft, which took the reins from series founder Harmonix on “Guitar Hero III.” The Wii and PS2 versions were developed by Vicarious Visions and Budcat Creations, respectively.

Tom Hamilton Talks About Banned in Boston

I thought I’d write and talk about some of the stuff that’s going on these days. We’re really excited about the Guitar Hero thing and have been hammering away at helping it all get ready. I thought making records was complicated!

I’m going to be in a play called Banned in Boston which I do every year around this time. It’s a comedy about how ridiculous modern life can be especially when it comes to politics. Or pretty much anything having to do with reality. They get well known people from Boston to go up onstage and say things that would ruin their careers if they said it anywhere else. Luckily I can ham it up and there are no consequences (except for the suffering of the audience). The best thing about it is that it raises a lot of money for a group called Urban Improv. They go to schools in areas where there’s a lot of danger on the streets and help the kids have strategies for dealing with dicey situations. It’s been going for a long time and has been proven to make a difference.

I’m doing some press to let people know it’s happening. This morning I did an on air interview with WZLX which is Boston’s classic rock station. I think it went pretty well considering I only woke up ten minutes before I was supposed to call. It was 8:10. If way back when we started the band I knew I would have to get up that early I would have gotten a normal job.

Tomorrow I’m going to be doing one for Kiss 108 at 7:15. There’s no telling what kind of stuff will fall out of my mouth into the microphone at that hour.

So anyway, just because we’re off the road doesn’t mean we’re being unproductive.

We’re all in album mode. Everybody has been saving up riffs we can make into Aerosmith songs when we hit the studio. I’m restraining myself about when it will come out. We have some solid song ideas happening and we’re not putting it out until the inspiration drips right out of your speakers.

Until next time,

TH

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler exudes the coolness of a veteran rock star, but the former New Hampshire lad is a gadget geek at heart. In the new issue of Private Air magazine, the rocker shows off a watch that contains a 007-like emergency beacon that he says he smuggled into the US from France. “These are illegal in the States, but I had to have one,” Tyler (left) gushes. (He also talks about the band, which just finished its biggest tour in years, promising that their next album - their last for Sony - will be “a nice, real record.”) Tyler loves flying (he estimates he’s leased hundreds of jets), founded Red Wing Motorcycles with a couple of family members, and once was in training to fly in the Russian space shuttle program. “The only reason I passed on it was because of my kids,” Tyler tells the magazine. “But, I was ready. I was so ready.”
